life & food

This blog is another way for me to keep in touch with my friends, to let them know what I'm upto. I do hope Shalu Bhalu will find it really useful and will not pester me for recipes (just kidding!). Maybe some day when Little Gaea grows up she would like to read it too...

fancy cooking

when i started out on my cooking adventures, about eight years back, i was completely into acquiring fancy cooking equipment. when lifestyle started stocking such equipment i went on a wild spending spree and bought several fancy pots and pans. in fact, i was mighty disappointed when i couldn't find a tagine or a couscousiere. however, over time i have realized that making do with what i have is both fun and creative. so now i use a huge strainer instead of a couscousiere and believe me, it works just fine. as for the tagine, i'm planning to make one for myself this summer at my pottery studio.
but as i was writing this post, i remembered that i needed one of those bamboo steamers to make dumplings. any ideas on how i can substitute the bamboo steamer with some utensil readily available in an average indian kitchen?
here is the minimalist, mark bittman of the new york times who tells you how you can do without all that fancy stuff in your kitchen.

I can definitely relate to this post. I have a studio and a small kitchenette, and try to cook as much with little space. I feel sometimes I can only cook If I have certain things. Hey eating is a way to live, not a way to spend right? I actually work with Gourmet Magazine and I love food! We're having this sweepstakes where you can instantly win a trip for 2 to a top resort. Just wanted to let you in on the secret. Check it out at http://condenast.eprize.net/gourmet/index.tbapp?affiliate_id=1v. Good luck and happy cooking.

Hi Rums,

I've really been enjoying this blog.

Could I make one suggestion, though? It's such good value, but it would be value-enhanced if you added some pictures, graphics or breakout quotes just to give it a bit of a design feel.

Maybe that's just my background in newspaper/ magazine design - but I'm sure it would work really well.

Let me know how you go ...

Cheers

David

hi rums

you might want to give the ole cooker a try. dont put the stopper on. Put a vessel inside it and crisscross the bottom with shoots of bamboo to give it the bamboo flavor/aroma-if thats what yr going for. cover the top with a cheese cloth to absorb the falling condensation. Great blog. Keep on writing.
