life & food

This blog is another way for me to keep in touch with my friends, to let them know what I'm upto. I do hope Shalu Bhalu will find it really useful and will not pester me for recipes (just kidding!). Maybe some day when Little Gaea grows up she would like to read it too...

the book meme

it's been pretty crazy around here for sometime. we had two little houseguests, b's daughter and nephew (aged 10 and 11 years respectively), who had come for little g's first b'day. to look at the pics of g's b'day and the kids' trip go here.
the kids left last evening and here i am back to blogging about food and life. but before anything else, i would like to complete this meme my friend lulu has tagged me to.

1. total number of books i've owned: i really don't know, several.

2. last book i bought: 'guns, germs and steel' by jared diamond and the complete sherlock holmes by arthur conan doyle. i'm reading jared diamond's 'collapse' currently and am completely hooked! i decided to buy his other book as well. i've been dying to read sherlock holmes so when i spotted a sale at the om bookshop i couldn't resist the good deal on the complete works and bought myself a copy.

3. last book i read: i read at least three books at a time, don't ask me how, i just do it. so the last books i read were orhan pamuk's 'snow', chitrita banerji's 'life and food in bengal', shoba narayan's 'monsoon diary', and ari weinzweig's zingerman's guide to good eating (this book is a gem, and has some fine and simple recipes as well).

4. five books that mean a lot to me:

1.. 'atomised' by michel houellebecq: this is my favourite book. here is an interview with the master himself from the guardian.
2.. chocolat by joanne harris: i love this book mostly for its incredible imagery, all revolving around chocolate. and don't waste time watching the film (unless of course you are a j depp fan) if you want to get the true essence of this book.
3.. choke by chuck palahniuk: this is one crazy book and i love it! i like his fightclub too, but choke is my favourite.
4.. j r r tolkien's 'lord of the rings': what can i say, i'm a serious lotr junky!
5.. the david remnick edited 'the new gilded age': this is a fabulous collection of writings from the new yorker about the 1990s and captures moments that define those golden years when people became millionaires and billionaires while still in school, when it became possible for millions of people to dream and achieve all that they dreamt of, when the net turned all conventional wisdom on its head. the book has some of the best writing on business.

5. which 5 people would you most like to see fill thisout in their blog: well, i would love to know what sabiha is reading. others don't have blogs. and though i know what papamali is reading, i would love to see his comments on the books he has read/reading.

Please read my response to your comment on my blog, i'm a bit hurt at what you said, but the fact of the matter is that i'm underpaid. Big time. And people ask why print doesn't get any talent nowadays.

hi rums
thanks for doing the meme thing. i was amused to discover that we share one more thing in common - reading several books at a time!
i'm reading shobha narayan's "monsoon diary", ian mcewan's "saturday" and khalih hosseini's "kite runner" right now.

hi rums,
i am really enjoying shobha narayan's book. many of her childhood memories bring back my own since i'm a tamilian as well. also, it's interesting to see how she prepares some of the classic dishes like rasam since everyone has their own way.
